Few silver linings in 2015 motorcycle accident data

Motor vehicle accident data is always a year or so behind, because compiling all that data and churning it out in a timely manner is difficult. With that said, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has data on motorcycle accidents from 2015 in the United States. The figures show an increase in fatalities in motorcycle accidents, but somewhat surprisingly a decline in injuries in motorcycle accidents.

4,976 people died in motorcycle accidents in 2015, whereas 4,594 people died in 2014. About 88,000 people suffered injuries in motorcycle accident in 2015, whereas that figure was about 92,000 in 2014.

But getting to the heart of the matter is this chilling figure: motorcyclists were 29 times more likely to die in an accident and five times more likely to suffer an injury in an accident than car occupants in 2015 (per vehicle mile traveled).

Motorcyclists are in an incredibly risky position out on the road. Their vehicle inherently provides almost no safety features, and when they are struck or involved in an accident, motorcyclists are practically guaranteed to fall off their vehicle. This can lead to serious head injuries, terrible abrasions, broken bones, spinal injuries, and other catastrophic or fatal injuries.

When the accident in question was caused by another driver, the motorcyclist and/or his or her loved ones need to consider their legal position. A personal injury lawsuit can hold negligent drivers responsible, while offering the motorcyclist a chance to earn compensation to deal with the injuries and aftermath of the crash.
