Vacationing in Hawaii this summer? 4 safety tips

Summer officially began on June 21. Now that the children are out of school, many families are coming to Hawaii for vacation. As one of the top tourist destinations on Earth, Hawaii has just about everything that makes for a perfect summer vacation: beaches, surfing, scuba diving, hiking and just about any other outdoor activity you can imagine.

However, there is also the possibility of getting serious injured during your Hawaiian vacation. Here are four safety tips from travel site Hawaii.com to help you enjoy yourself and reduce your chances of disaster:

1. While on the beach, protect yourself against sunburn by limiting your time in direct sunlight. Use lots of sunscreen and wear a hat and sunglasses.

2. Be careful when swimming or surfing in the ocean. Don’t swim alone and only swim where there is a lifeguard nearby. While surfing, never turn your back on the waves, and don’t try to fight if you are caught in a strong current.

3. Watch out for box jellyfish, which enter Hawaii’s waters about 8-12 days after the full moon. They can sting, and be very dangerous if you are allergic. If you plan to explore the state’s coral reefs, avoid stepping on the reef or you could get an infected cut on your foot.

4. Don’t leave your valuables in your rental car, which are popular targets for thieves. Instead, keep them in your hotel room safe.

Some injuries are unfortunate but unavoidable. But other times they would not have happened if not for someone else’s carelessness or recklessness. Too often, visitors to Hawaii get seriously hurt because of the negligence of a hotel owner, tour company or surfing instructor.

Getting compensation after a recreational injury can be complicated if you live on the mainland. It can make a huge difference to have a personal injury attorney who practices in Hawaii.
