The risks of skydiving

When it comes to tourists, Hawaii offers something for every taste. Want to lounge on the beach under blue skies? We have that. Interested in exploring the fascinating mix of cultures that makes Hawaii like no place else on Earth? We have you covered.

Then there are the multitude of options our state has for outdoor adventure-seekers. From surfing, scuba diving and snorkeling to hiking and sailing, Hawaii offers some of the best opportunities in the United States for adrenaline junkies to get their fix.

Skydiving risks

Skydiving is another thrilling activity popular with visitors. With the help of a qualified professional, skydiving can be both safe and great fun for first-timers. But there are risks every time you jump out of an airplane thousands of feet in the air -- especially if you were not given proper equipment or training, of if you are doing tandem skydiving with an unqualified or careless helper.

A Swedish study discussed in an article in Live Science found that one of the biggest ways a jump can go bad is when the diver loses control during freefall, or the period between jumping and opening the parachute. Though you are in freefall, it is still very important that the person you are tandem diving maintain a stable fall. Tumbling through the air can cause you to get entangled in the chute or fail to open it entirely.

Another risk is accidental water landings. If you aren’t prepared with a life jacket, you could be in serious danger if you inadvertently land in a lake or river.

Unexpected tourist injuries

Skydiving deaths are very rare in the U.S., but they do happen. Tourists never expect to get seriously injured on vacation, but when they do, they might have a cause of action against a negligent driver, business or property owner. Your best bet in that situation is to hire a lawyer who is licensed to practice in Hawaii and is highly familiar with the law here.
