Car crashes into business again

A restaurant interior would appear to be the least risky place for a motor vehicle accident in Hawaii. However, a car crash into a Hawaii Kwai restaurant earlier this month is only the latest crash into businesses in that area over the last several years.

According to police, a 72-year-old woman drove her Honda Accord right into a café at the Koko Marina Center. The crash occurred on a Saturday after 4:00 pm. Seven people received treatment for cuts and bruises. The crash damaged at least four other vehicles in the parking lot. The damage will keep the restaurant closed for at least one month.

The police are still investigating this crash. The representative for this district said it is not yet known whether the collision can be attributed to the driver or her car. The driver apologized for the accident and said she is focusing on taking care of her mental health.

In 2014, another driver drove her SUV into a bank at that same shopping center. Fortunately, there were no major injuries in that crash. And, in 2013, another 77-year-old driver injured two people when she crashed her car into a nearby U.S. Post Office just down the street. She was trying to switch to reverse but mistakenly placed her vehicle into drive. And, yet another crash took place in 2012, when an older driver drove his Mercedes through the side of a nearby drug store. There were no injuries in this accident.

Rep. Barr, merchants and retailers have joined into the call for improving safety measures at the Koko Marine Center by installing blocks and railings. Rep. Barr suggested that potted plants will provide an aesthetic means of providing safety and appear less severe than railings. The Center's staff also met to discuss safety options.

Pedestrians or customers injured by a vehicle may be entitled to compensation if their injuries were caused by a negligent or reckless driver or where the property owner installed insufficient protection. An attorney can help obtain evidence and seek compensation for medical expenses and other losses in a personal injury lawsuit.
