Bar sued for death of teenager

Serving underage minors can have safety and legal consequences. In a case from Pearl City, the mother of a teenager who died from a suspected overdose of drugs and alcohol filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the bar who allegedly served her.

The 17-year-old teenager collapsed outside this bar in Pearl City on May 12, according to police. She was immediately transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The teenager was weeks away from her high school graduation.

The family's attorney claimed that the teenager was obviously underage and did not bother to lie about her age or use a fake identification. The family's own investigation located witnesses and determined that she was served in this bar the night she died and that bar staff knew that she was a minor.

The family claims that a combination of alcohol and drugs caused her death. In the lawsuit, filed on Oct. 5, they also charge that the bar was grossly negligent and intentionally disregarded the teenager's safety and well-being. This was a direct and immediate cause of her death.

The teenager's mother is seeking the bar's admission of responsibility for this incident. She intends to have a negotiated settlement among the parties and its insurer but is willing to vigorously pursue this cause of action.

The bar had no previous violations, according to the Honolulu Liquor Commission. Neighboring businesses said that the bar closed immediately after this fatality and the owners are hard to find. However, the bar's business is still active according to the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs website.

Neighbors claim that there was frequently suspicious activity at the bar. They are relieved that it closed.

Families who suffer the loss of a loved one through negligence or recklessness may be entitled to compensation. They should seek prompt legal assistance to gather evidence and pursue their rights in a wrongful death case.
