Drunk driving accidents are a dangerous problem

An ocean may separate Hawaii from the mainland but unfortunately that buffer does nothing to insulate the islands from a truly national problem: drunk driving. Every year thousands of Americans lose their lives in collisions with alcohol-intoxicated drivers. Sadly, some of those victims are residents of this state.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 484 people were killed in Hawaii between the years of 2003 and 2012. This averages out to about one drunk driving death in the state every month over the course of a decade. Drunk driving deaths are tragedies not only for the victims who perish at the hands of reckless individuals but also for their families who must learn to live without the people they love.

Interestingly, women in Hawaii suffer drunk driving deaths at a significantly lower occurrence than men, but men who die from alcohol-related collisions on the islands do so at a rate higher than the national average. Nationally, 5.2 men per 100,000 die in drunk driving crashes while in Hawaii that figure rises to 5.7 men per 100,000.

Drunk driving accidents are dangerous and damaging to people's lives. They are almost always preventable tragedies that could have been avoided if individuals made responsible choices about getting behind the wheels of their cars after consuming alcohol. While law enforcement officials do their best to catch drunk drivers before they can hurt anyone, alcohol-related collisions are a reality in Hawaii.

Readers of this legal blog who have lost loved ones to drunk driving accidents understand the impossibility of moving one's life forward after a devastating crash. However, with the support of dedicated legal professionals some survivors are able to pursue their legal rights and obtain compensation for the losses they suffered when their loved ones perished.
