Bicyclist seriously injured by racing vehicle

One of the major draws of living in or visiting the Hawaiian Islands is the opportunity for people to be outside for much of the year. While other parts of the country experience bone-chilling cold and heavy snow, Honolulu residents can generally pass time outdoors in shorts. The pleasant weather of the region allows people to engage in a host of year-round outdoor activities, and one of these activities that are popular with individuals of all ages is cycling.

Bicyclists ride their two-wheeled crafts for pleasure and for purpose with some individuals using bikes for their daily commutes. Individuals who ride bikes are expected to follow the rules of the road to ensure that they and the others near them are safe. However, a recent accident on a Honolulu road shows just how dangerous accidents between cars and bikes can be when vehicle drivers act irresponsibly.

Two cars were allegedly racing and drifting on Tantalus Drive when one of the cars hit a 33-year-old woman on a bike. The woman sustained critical injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The 20-year-old driver of the car that hit her was arrested for first degree negligent injury but has been released as the investigation continues.

A person who faces criminal charges for hurting another person may be punished for breaking the law. They may also, however, be held civilly liable for the harm they cause to their victim. In this case the victim may have the opportunity to seek her accident-related losses, such as hospital bills and lost wages, from the driver whose actions led to her serious physical injuries. A personal injury action could help them recover these compensations.
