Recognizing traumatic brain injuries due to auto accidents

Auto accidents can lead to a number of different injuries, including trauma to the brain. Such injuries can lead to life-altering or even life-threatening circumstances. Thankfully, it is possible to seek reparations for injuries when the responsible party was negligent.

It is important to recognize and treat these injuries immediately. There are a few signs to look for in parties who have been in auto accidents.

Physical or emotional signs

Victims and their family members may notice a number of indicators that a serious problem exists. Some of them include:

  • Bruises, bumps and lacerations
  • Difficulty walking or balancing
  • Slurred speech
  • Sensitivity to light or blindness
  • Numbness

Serious accidents are not the only sources of a traumatic brain injury; fender benders can cause a TBI, too. When people notice signs, they should seek medical attention immediately so a physician can examine the injured party and run any necessary tests to determine the trauma level.

Sometimes the signs of a TBI are not obvious right after the accident. Along with new physical bruising, victims should pay attention to any mood swings or shifts in their general mood. Other indicators may be having headaches constantly or forgetting things frequently.

Older children may display some of the same signs as adults. However, it may not be as easy to tell with younger children, so it is critical that parents and family members watch them very carefully after an accident. When children seem depressed, will not nurse or eat, or cry inconsolably, it is a good idea to take them in for examination. It is important to watch children closely after an accident for a few weeks.

These are some of the most common symptoms of brain injury, but it is not an exhaustive list. Therefore, if a loved one seems to be having difficulty after an accident, he or she should be taken in for an examination. It is better to be safe than sorry.
