When a car wreck results in a TBI

Hawaii is a truly beautiful state, and it is no wonder that millions of visitors flock here each year to enjoy our beaches, tropical forests and deep sea fishing and marvel at our volcanoes. If you are one of those visitors, however, you know that paradise or not, we have our share of traffic and auto accidents. Some of those result in catastrophic injuries to drivers and passengers.

One of the worst injuries you can sustain in a car wreck is a traumatic brain injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 286,000 people suffer a TBI in a car crash every year. In this type of injury your head receives such a blow that it injures your brain to the extent that it becomes dysfunctional

Car crashes usually cause TBIs in the following ways:

  • Your head crashes into your windshield, steering wheel or some other hard object.
  • Flying glass or debris pierces your skull.
  • The impact of the crash causes your head and neck to whiplash, i.e., jerk forward and backward with such speed and violence that your brain likewise violently moves back and forth inside your skull, thereby injuring its delicate tissues.

TBI symptoms

While you should receive immediate medical assistance any time you sustain a head injury in a car crash, the doctor may or may not be able to diagnose a TBI because your symptoms may or may not appear immediately. Therefore, stay vigilant during the rest of your vacation for the following symptoms:

  • Blurry vision or a sudden sensitivity to light
  • Ringing in your ears or a sudden sensitivity to sound
  • Headaches, vomiting or nausea
  • Dizziness or problems keeping your balance
  • Feeling “weird” or disoriented
  • Sudden mood swings or feeling depressed in the middle of paradise

If any of these symptoms appear, go back to the ER and report them, plus the fact of your recent car crash. The doctors likely will want to rerun TBI tests.

TBI costs

Depending on the severity of your TBI, you could face hospitalization and surgery either here in Hawaii or after you get back home. You also could face skyrocketing medical, physical and occupation therapy, and rehabilitation bills once you are back home. If you sustained a severe TBI, it could disable you for life.

Given the potentially extraordinary costs of a TBI, your best strategy is to talk with an experienced local personal injury attorney before leaving Hawaii. Since (s)he knows the local courts and their rules and procedures, (s)he can more easily and effectively handle any lawsuit you may wish to file against the negligent driver who caused the car crash than a mainland attorney could.
