Most dangerous intersections in Hawaii

Every year, millions of tourists go to Hawaii to take in all of the sights and culture. Many people end up needing to rent cars or mopeds to get around, which makes for a lot of inexperienced drivers on some dangerous roads. You need to watch out for some of the most dangerous intersections in the state or else you could completely upend your vacation.

Car accidents can happen anywhere in Hawaii if you are not careful. However, the following areas pose unique risks, especially if you have never driven in the area before.

The 1450 block of Ala Moana Blvd.

According to a recent study, the most dangerous area to drive in all of Honolulu is the 1450 block around Ala Moana Blvd. The study found that a total of 312 accidents occurred in that area in 2015 alone. These statistics have earned the area the designation as "the most dangerous intersection in the nation." This holds true for both motorists and pedestrians, so no matter how you have gotten around in Honolulu, you need to be extra cautious when you go through here.

Other dangerous intersections

You also need to watch out driving through Hawaii regardless of where you are. Some of the other places to keep an eye out for include:

  • Waialae Avenue and 16th Avenue
  • King Street and Isenberg Street
  • Beretania Street and Piikoi Street
  • Beretania Street and Ward Avenue
  • Kapiolani Boulevard and Keeaumoku Street

Some accidents are unavoidable, but there are some steps you can take as you drive around Hawaii to lower your risk. You need to remember to check your blind spots at all times. Many people ride mopeds and scooters around the islands, and these smaller vehicles can easily become hidden in your blind spots. Always check before merging lanes. You also need to be aware of Hawaii roads and how some are narrow or uneven.
