What are the effects of a severe concussion?

In a car crash, there are many different kinds of injuries that could occur. Some might include spinal injuries or brain injuries, broken bones and soft-tissue injuries. Of all the injuries you could suffer, one of the worst is a brain injury.

The most common kind of brain injury, a concussion, may not seem particularly dangerous because of how many people suffer mild versions of them all the time. However, a serious concussion can have lasting implications in your life. If you hit your head in an accident, it is essential that you seek medical attention immediately.

How can an acute concussion affect you?

While a mild concussion may lead to symptoms that resolve in a few weeks, the same is not true of an acute (severe) concussion.

There are some serious complications that people can face when suffering severe concussions including:

  • Tinnitus
  • Changes in behavior
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Recurrent dizziness
  • Vision or eye disturbances
  • Blood or fluid draining from the ears or nose
  • Trouble with memory
  • Slurred speech

and many others. It's important to note that no two people are the same, and no two brain injuries are exactly alike. A concussion for one person might heal differently than a similar concussion in another.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

Symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • The loss of balance
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Psychological problems
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Forgetfulness
  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Nausea

If you experience these or any other unusual symptoms, it's necessary to seek medical care. Early treatment may be helpful in reducing the long-term consequences of a traumatic brain injury.
